Process and fees

The cost of having custom-made cabinetry and furniture is based largely on the amount of labour hours it takes to make it. The materials often make up but a small fraction of the cost.

Several clients request ballpark estimates even before the project is defined. It should be clearly understood that any ballpark figures thus provided are for discussion purposes and are not binding.

The first step is usually an initial consultation on-site. During this meeting, we discuss the spatial and functional characteristics of your project, and discuss design ideas that you have in mind. There is a $60 consultation for each visit.

Following the consultation, I produce one or more conceptual drawings based on the basic concept we discussed. Designs, drawing and plans remain my property; however, if agreeable to both parties, it may be possible for you to purchase them for $300 per design. Once you approve a design, I prepare and present an estimate of the cost (which usually excludes installation; this is typically charged on an hourly basis). Upon your approval, I require a deposit before the project may be launched.

The process starts with shop drawings; depending on the project, you may be invited or requested to approve these drawing. The laborious manufacturing process then gets underway, leading to dry-fitting of the pieces. Again, a visit may be arranged, or I may email photos, if appropriate.

The finishing process then follows, which may take as long as the cabinetmaking process. Upon completion, a date is then set for delivery and installation, if required.

Payment terms are 40% at the time the estimate is signed, and either the balance upon completion of the manufacturing and finishing (for smaller projects), or for larger projects, 40% prior to the application of finish, and the balance percent upon completion. Installation is charged on an hourly basis, and payable immediately upon completion.
